Typhoon to affect southern South Korea and mainland Japan October 5-7; strong winds, downpours, and localized disruptions expected

Typhoon Kong-rey hit parts of Japan's Ryukyu Islands on Thursday, October 4, with strong winds and torrential rains, injuring eight people and disrupting power supplies. Over 100 domestic flights serving Naha Airport (OKA) were canceled.
The typhoon is currently moving towards South Korea and mainland Japan and is expected to affect these areas October 5-7.
Southern areas of South Korea, including Jeju Island, are anticipated to be most affected, with wind gusts of 100-125 km/h (62-78 mph) - equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane - expected. Heavy rainfall totaling 10-20 cm (4-8 in) is forecast for the area from Friday night into Sunday. Over 100 flights serving Jeju International Airport (CJU) have been canceled as of October 5.
In Japan, parts of Kyushu and Honshu are expected to face wind speeds of over 80 km/h (50 mph).
Consequent localized flooding, further flight and traffic disruptions, and power outages are expected in affected areas of Japan and South Korea over the coming days.

Tropical cyclones and typhoons are common in the west Pacific from June through November.
