Taiwan: Referendum on same-sex marriage to be held November 24

Authorities announce referendum on same-sex marriage to be held November 24; gatherings in run-up expected

Warning

Event

Taiwanese authorities have announced that a referendum on whether the island's civil law should recognize same-sex marriage will be held on November 24. The date coincides with mayoral and magisterial elections. The referendum will follow a Constitutional Court ruling in May 2017 granting the right for same-sex couples to legally marry and giving two years for associated legislation to be implemented. Gatherings in favor and against the legal recognition of same-sex marriage are expected in the run-up to the vote.

Advice

Travelers are advised to avoid all gatherings as a precaution, even if these generally pass off peacefully.
