A high-speed train traveling between Taipei and Taitung derailed at 16:50 (local time) on Sunday, October 21, resulting in at least 22 deaths and 170 injuries. The Puyuma Express train reportedly derailed close to Xinma station in Su'ao and authorities indicate dozens more passengers remained trapped in the wreckage. Associated transportation disruptions are expected in the near-term as rescue efforts are ongoing.
