Angola: Nationwide security operations to begin November 6 /update 1

On Wednesday, October 30, Angolan Minister of the Interior, Ângelo da Veiga Tavares, announced the official launch of “Operation Rescue,” a nationwide security operation set to begin the following week. During a press conference in Luanda, Tavares said security personnel from all sectors will begin operations on Tuesday, November 6, with the objective of combatting crime and illegal immigration across the country. Operation Rescue will also focus on “restoring state authority” in various sectors, including public transportation and informal markets. In particular, there will be a crackdown on illegal taxis and the illegal use of passenger motorcycles. Heightened security measures and presence is expected throughout the country in the near-term.

Context

Operation Rescue is being conducted in coordination with “Operation Transparency,” which was launched on September 25 in the provinces of Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Moxico, Bié, Malanje, Uíje and Zaire. Under Operation Transparency, more than 380,000 migrants suspected of illegally entering Angola or being involved in diamond smuggling have been expelled from the country.
