Australia: Strong winds cause delays at Sydney and Melbourne airports Nov. 23-24

Severe delays and cancelations ongoing at Sydney and Melbourne airports; residual disruptions expected November 24

Warning

Event

Sydney Airport (SYD) and Melbourne Airport (MEL) are experiencing severe flight delays as well as cancelations on Friday, November 23, due to strong winds of up to 70 km/h (45 mph). Single runway operations are in effect. Residual disruptions can be expected through November 24.

The winds follow a large dust storm that affected New South Wales (NSW) on November 22. The Rural Fire Service also reported 21 fires spread by the winds in the drought-stricken NSW region.

Advice

Individuals traveling to/from Sydney or Melbourne airports are advised to contact their airlines to confirm flight schedules.
