Context
There has been a heightened terrorist threat across Europe in recent years, following a series of deadly attacks in major European cities, including in Barcelona, Paris, London, and Brussels. According to French government sources, some 1700 French citizens have traveled to Iraq and Syria to join militant organizations, such as the Islamic State (IS) group, since 2014.
