Haiti: Protests in Port-au-Prince and Nord department

Event

At least three people were shot during protests held by students at the Duvivier High School, located near Cité Soleil in the north of the capital Port-au-Prince, on Thursday, November 8. The protest was held to demand better learning conditions in classrooms. Further such protests are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Meanwhile, a series of anti-government protests is take to take place in Nord department beginning on Saturday, November 10.

More generally, protests are expected to become more numerous and larger in size throughout the country, notably in the capital, in the lead-up to November 18 commemorations marking the anniversary of the 1803 Battle of Vertières. The political opposition is expected to use their influence over gang leaders to disrupt movements in Port-au-Prince and other cities around the country.

Clashes between protesters and police and other forms of violence (vandalism, roadblocks, etc.) cannot be ruled out.

Context

Numerous demonstrations have been held in recent months, notably to demand the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse and the arrests of individuals implicated in government corruption scandals.
