Indonesia: Flooding, landslides kill several on Sumatra as of Nov. 8

Event

Flash flooding and landslides were reported in the provinces of North Sumatra, Riau and West Java on November 6-7 which have resulted in the deaths of several people as of Thursday, November 8. In North Sumatra, thousands have been displaced due to rising flood waters along the Batang Gadis River, which has also resulted in damaged roads. Authorities are also responding to fatalities and missing persons reports in  flooded communities in Singingi Regency (Riau).

Disaster agency officials have warned of additional heavy rainfall in Sumatra over the next two weeks which may lead to further flooding and landslides. Lingering transportation disruptions are to be expected in the affected provinces in the near-term.

Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia, especially during the rainy season, which lasts from October to April.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding and landslides, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
