Kuwait: Clean-up underway after severe floods November 18 /update 5

Authorities in Kuwait began clean-up efforts nationwide after several days of sustained rainfall which prompted widespread property damages and road closures. Civil defense officials indicate efforts to pump standing water from roadways and tunnels began on Friday, November 16, and the Ministry of Education reopened schools as of November 18. Rainfall totals exceeded 24 cm (9 in) between November 12 and November 15, the equivalent of one-year rain totals. Flights at Kuwait International Airport (KWI) had also experienced delays and cancelations throughout the week, although operations had begun returning to normal by Thursday. Residual transportation disruptions may persist over the coming days as authorities complete clean-up and repair efforts.

Context

Flooding in Kuwait has left at least one person dead as of November 18. Minister of Public Works Hussam al-Roumi resigned on November 9 due to extensive damage to public infrastructure, while the Kuwait Oil Company issued a temporary state of emergency which was lifted on November 10.
