Philippines: Tropical Storm Man-Yi to affect country November 25-26

Event

On Thursday, November 22, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) lifted all weather warnings related to the passage of Tropical Depression Samuel, which made landfall in Borongan (Eastern Samar) on November 21. However, PAGASA is monitoring another storm, Man-Yi, located some 1500 km (930 mi) east of Mindanao and currently intensifying. Man-Yi is expected to affect the country from November 25 or 26, although direct landfall is not currently forecast. The storm may intensify into a typhoon.

Context

Tropical cyclones and typhoons are common in the Western Pacific from May through November. Since the beginning of the year, the country has already experienced 19 such storms.

Advice

Individuals in the Philippines are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, reconfirm flights, obey instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
