Zimbabwe: Nationwide anti-government demonstrations Nov. 29

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) calls for nationwide demonstrations on November 29; clashes between protesters and police possible

Warning

Event

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party has called for nationwide demonstrations to take place on Thursday, November 29, to protest perceived worsening economic conditions in the country. Tensions remain high between MDC supporters and the government, and opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has called on supporters at recent party rallies in October to carry-out sustained anti-government protests. A heightened security presence is expected near demonstrations sites. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

Political tensions have been high since the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission declared incumbent President Mnangagwa the winner of the July 30 presidential elections. Chamisa has alleged that the election should be invalidated due to fraud. Zimbabwe's national broadcaster has recently claimed MDC supporters will hold "mass protests" in an attempt to weaken the government and to "hand over power to the opposition party."

Advice

Individuals in Zimbabwe are advised to avoid all demonstrations, obey all instructions issued by the local authorities, and closely monitor the situation.
