Australia: Large bushfires in South Australia and Victoria states December 7

Event

Large bushfires continue to affect Kangaroo Island, Australia's third largest island, located 110 km (70 mi) southwest of Adelaïde as of December 7. Dozens of firefighters and firetrucks have been deployed to the area from the mainland to support local crews, while waterbombing aircraft continue to dump water from above. Smaller additional fires have been reported through the South Australia state (e.g. Emu Flat Rd, Keith, Naracoorte). Authorities have issued a "Watch and Act" message for the uncontrolled bushfire in Keith (southeast of Adelaïde).

Furthermore, authorities in Victoria state issued an evacuation alert for a bushfire in Little River, located 50 km (31 mi) from Melbourne. The fire has reportedly been contained but is still not under control. A "Watch and Act" downgraded warning has been then issued. Large smokes are still impacting the visibility, notably on the Princes Freeway.

Additional fires are possible in both states as high temperatures are expected in the coming hours and days.

Context

Wildfires are an annual summer event in Australia; however, the authorities have been on high alert since September 2015 over unseasonably warm temperatures, prompting scientists to speculate that climate change could be extending and increasing the intensity of the fire season.
