France: “Yellow vest” protests continue December 3 /update 11

Event

Further disruptions associated with the "yellow vest" movement are expected nationwide for a third consecutive week, with roadblocks reported in various regions of the country on Monday, December 3. Fuel shortages are feared, notably in Brittany, due to the blockade of many fuel depots.

There have been calls for another protest to take place in Paris on December 8. Should the demonstration take place, associated transportation disruptions, a heightened security presence, and violent unrest are possible. During a related protest on December 1, around 400 people were arrested and another 263 injured, after clashes broke out between protesters and riot police forces in Paris. Significant material damage was reported following the protests (eg. cars set on fire, businesses and monuments targeted).

Context

The "yellow vest" movement has been carrying out daily protests since November 17 against rising fuel prices and a planned fuel tax. Hundreds of thousands have engaged in slow-rolling protests to block roads and highways, causing significant traffic disruptions. Two people were killed and over 550 injured in traffic incidents during the height of the protests.

The government is planning a tax increase on fuel prices, including gasoline and diesel, beginning on January 1, 2019, to promote environmentally friendly practices.
