Heavy rains cause flooding in Greater Jakarta area December 5; transportation disruptions possible over the coming hours

Localized rainfall totals of up to 50 cm (19 in) caused flooding in parts of the Greater Jakarta area through Wednesday, December 5. Public Works officials reported that flooding in Depok inundated roads and houses in the Sukmajaya district and authorities deployed teams to improve drainage efforts. The Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has also identified at least 10 districts in the capital that are prone to landslides due to recent rains: Cilandak, Jagakarsa, Kebayoran Lama, Kebayoran Baru, Mampang Prapatan, Pancoran, Pasar Minggu, and Pesanggrahan in South Jakarta, as well as Kramat Jati and Pasar Rebo in East Jakarta. Localized transportation disruptions, including due to road closures, are possible in the Greater Jakarta area over the coming hours.
Context
Flooding is common in Indonesia during the rainy season, which spans from December to March. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicates the rainy season is forecast to peak in January to February.

Individuals present in and around Jakarta are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities and anticipate residual transportation disruptions. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
