Anti-terror troops arrest suspected terrorists in Makasar (South Sulawesi) on December 14

Informational

Event

Anti-terror police reportedly arrested two suspected terrorists in Makasar (South Sulawesi) on Friday, December 14. According to officials, Densus 88 forces carried out a series of raids on the residences of the suspects, who had set up a "safe house" to support militants plotting attacks in the country. A heightened security presence is expected in the area over the near-term.

Context

In early December, police arrested two suspected terrorists in Yogyakarta region who reportedly planned to launch attacks during the Christmas holiday season. Indonesian authorities have increased security measures during the end-of-year holiday period, deploying nearly 100,000 police personnel to popular gathering points and tourist sites.

The terrorist threat in Indonesia remains high and terrorist plots in the country are routinely disrupted. Experts estimate hundreds of IS-fighters have traveled to Indonesia from the Middle East in recent years to join Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), which remains one of the most active IS-affiliated groups in Southeast Asia.

Advice

Individuals in Indonesia are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and report any suspicious behavior or activity to the authorities.
