At least 20 people were killed and 165 others injured when a tsunami struck beaches along Indonesia's Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra on Saturday, December 22, according to the Indonesian National Board of Disaster Management (BMKG). The tsunami affected the coast of Pandeglang, Serang, and South Lampung regencies in western Java and southern Sumatra around 16:30 (local time). The tsunami was reportedly triggered by an eruption of Krakatoa. At least two people remain missing as of 07:00 on Sunday, December 23, and dozens of buildings are reportedly damaged from the waves. Casualty numbers are expected to rise in the coming hours and days. Infrastructure damage, including to telecommunication and transportation services, is likely.
