An explosion near a restaurant damaged several houses and businesses in the Toyohira district of Sapporo (Hokkaido prefecture) on the evening (local time) of Sunday, December 16. Police and fire services responding to the incident closed several streets due to debris and the ensuring fire located roughly three kilometers (1.8 mi) from the city center. At least 42 people were injured in the explosion. As of the morning of Monday, December 17, the cause is still under investigation. Nevertheless, unconfirmed reports suggest the explosion was caused by a gas blast. Residual transportation disruptions are expected in the area.
