Japan: Nationwide rubella outbreak continues /update 2

Event

There is an ongoing rubella outbreak across Japan, with 2454 confirmed cases reported between January 1, and mid-December. The most affected areas include Tokyo (with 830 cases), Kanagawa (342 cases), and Chiba ( 334 cases). Health officials have advised people, especially pregnant women, to ensure vaccinations against the disease are up to date.

Context

Rubella is a contagious viral disease which is spread via airborne droplets emitted from the upper respiratory tract. Symptoms may include fever, sore throat and a rash on the face and body. Between 25 and 50 percent of people infected with rubella may not develop any symptoms.
