Jordan: Authorities close Dead Sea Highway due to flooding December 20

Jordanian authorities close Dead Sea Highway on December 20 due to rising water levels and flooding after recent rainfall; transportation disruptions expected over the coming hours

Warning

Event

Recent rainfall and consequent flooding prompted Jordanian authorities to completely close the Dead Sea Highway (Highway 65) to traffic on the evening (local time) of Thursday, December 20, until further notice. It is unclear when the road will reopen. Transportation disruptions and traffic detours are to be expected over the coming hours.

Advice

Individuals in Jordan are advised to prepare for associated traffic disruptions, monitor local weather forecasts, adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. road closures), and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
