Philippines: 6.9-magnitude earthquake strikes off Mindanao December 29

Event

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the island of Mindanao at approximately 11:39 (local time) on Saturday, December 29. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was located at 5.8°N, 126.9°E at a depth of 49 km (31 mi). Hazardous tsunami waves are possible within 300 km (186 mi) of the epicenter. Aftershocks are possible over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to evacuate low-lying coastal areas, monitor developments to the situation, be prepared for further aftershocks and tsunami waves, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that tsunamis are a series of powerful waves and there may be long periods of time between wave crests.
