Warning

Event

Over 30 trade unions in Puerto Rico are calling for supporters to march in San Juan on Wednesday, December 5, to protest the government’s decision to reduce employer contributions to staff medical plans. The demonstration is being held under the banner “Parrandón de los Trabajadores” and will begin at 10:00 (local time) outside of the Department of Labor building. Participants will then march to Hato Rey for a meeting with union leaders. Localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around the protest site and along the march route.

Context

The Puerto Rican government recently announced a new fiscal plan that will reduce employer contributions to medical plans between USD 100-800 a month. Union leaders argue that the cuts will significantly reduce workers’ salaries as they have to pay more for health care.

Advice

ndividuals present in San Juan are advised to monitor developments to the situation, to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
