Nationwide severe heatwave conditions forecast through January 18; take precautionnary measures

As of Tuesday, January 15, all of Australia's eight states and territories are affected by a severe heatwave, especially in the southeast part of the country, including in Sydney and New South Wales, with temperatures oscillating around 40°C (104°F). According to the national Bureau of Meteorology, these extreme weather conditions are expected to persist in the coming days; temperatures reaching over 45°C (113°F) are expected on Wednesday, January 16, in New South Wales, South Australia, and Victoria. Temperatures are expected to drop by Friday, January 18.

Advice

Individuals in Australia are advised to follow local weather reports, stay well-hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day and avoid alcohol), and avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from noon to 16:00). Be especially on guard against symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke in young children and seniors, as they are particularly vulnerable. Do not hesitate to contact emergency services if necessary.
