Haiti: Nationwide strike planned on February 4
Labor unions to strike in protest of high fuel prices February 4; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions possible
Event
The Brigade Syndicale Anti-Corruption (BSAK) and labor unions representing taxi drivers and private chauffeurs have announced a nationwide strike on Monday, February 4, to protest rising fuel prices. Union leaders are calling on the government to lower the price of fuel at points of sale and to investigate alleged corruption by petroleum conglomerates. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions and traffic congestion are to be expected on Monday. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Individuals in Haiti, particularly in Port-au-Prince, are advised to keep abreast of the situation, strictly avoid all protests due to the likelihood of violence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments (e.g. travel restrictions).
