Indonesia: Deadly rainfalls, flooding and landslides in South Sulawesi Jan. 23

Event

On Wednesday, January 23, torrential rains affected the Bili Bili dam located 30 km (19 mi) from the city of Makassar (Gowa Regency; South Sulawesi) resulting in deadly landslides. At least eight people were killed and thousands others displaced. According to the authorities, the death toll could rise as recovery operations in the affected area are still ongoing. Several infrastuctural damages were also reported, notably on roads and bridges; power cuts are also reported. Further inclement weather conditions are possible in the coming days, along with associated disruptions.

Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia, especially during the rainy season, which lasts from October to April.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding and landslides, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
