Japan: 6.3-magnitude earthquake strikes off Kagoshima prefecture January 8

Event

The United States Geological Survey observed an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale roughly 16 km (10 mi) south-southeast of Nishinoomote (Kagoshima prefecture) at 21:39 (local time) on Tuesday, January 8. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 35 km (21 mi) and the Japan Meteorological Agency has not issued a tsunami alert. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected regions should monitor the situation, be prepared for further aftershocks, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.

During an earthquake, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from any tall structures, such as buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
