Mozambique: Curfew imposed in Mocimboa da Praia January 31 /update 2

Local media sources reported on Thursday, January 31, that authorities have imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the city of Mocimboa da Praia (Cabo Delgado province). The curfew was declared in response to regular militant attacks in the area. Earlier on Friday, January 25, three foreign nationals suspected of leading attacks in the region were detained in Cabo Delgado province. Heightened security measures are expected throughout the province in the near term; further militant attacks are also likely.

Context

Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Shabaab) is believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017. According to local reports, at least 100 people were killed in such attacks.
