Security forces clash with militants and recover three IEDs in Maguindanao province on January 9

Filipino security forces clashed with Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) militants in the Barangay Darampua area of Maguindanao province on the morning (local time) of Wednesday, January 9. According to local sources, the security forces seized at least three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during the operation. Further security operations, as well as clashes between security forces and BIFF militants, are possible in Maguindanao province in the near term.
Context
The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) is an Islamist militant organization and Moro secessionist group active in the Mindanao region. The group has been active since 2008 when it split from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). In June 2018, the Philippine Army launched a fresh offensive against rebel groups in the southern provinces, where multiple Islamist militant groups operate.
