Thailand: Slight improvement of the air quality in Bangkok Jan. 16

Event

Authorities succeeded in reducing hazardous dust particulate levels in the greater Bangkok area thanks to rainmaking operations on Tuesday, January 15. According to the Pollution Control Department (PCD), the daily levels of particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less (PM2.5) dropped significantly in various districts of the capital and its surroundings, including in Bang Khunthian, Phaya Thai, and Phra Nakhon. However, some unhealthy levels are still reported as of Wednesday, January 16, in several other districts of Bangkok, e.g. Thon Buri, Lat Phrao, Wang Thong Lang, Din Daeng. According to the authorities, rainmaking operations will continue in the coming hours and days. The PCD expect weather conditions to improve by Thursday, January 17.

Exposure to high levels of PM2.5 can lead to various health issues, such as eye and skin irritation and headaches, and can aggravate cardiac and respiratory conditions. Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, limit outdoor activities until the situation normalize or wear N95 rated masks as a protection. Children and those with chronic respiratory illnesses should exercise increased caution.
