Uzbekistan: WHO certifies malaria-free status

Event

The WHO declared Uzbekistan malaria-free as of December 2018. The Uzbek government, along with international organizations, increased investment in combating the disease in 2000 by providing detection, diagnosis, and treatment efforts free of charge.

Context

The Uzbek government first eliminated malaria in 1961, although the disease was reintroduced due to its prevalence in neighboring states. Uzbekistan became the second country in 2018 to be declared malaria-free by the WHO, with Paraguay gaining the status in June.
