Crowded conditions, localized transportation disruptions, and a heightened security presence is expected; clashes between CPI-M supporters and political rivals during and following the event cannot be ruled out.

Context

India is set to hold general elections in April and May of 2019. A collection of opposition parties also held a political rally in Kolkata on January 26 that drew more than 500,000 people; on January 29, three people were injured in clashes between rival political groups following a rally in East Midnapore district.
