Indonesian authorities report increased volcanic activity at Mount Merapi (Java) January 29 - February 1; localized transportation disruptions possible

Indonesia’s Geological Disaster Agency (BPPTKG) reported increased volcanic activity at Mount Merapi on Java Island in recent days as of Friday, February 1. Hot ash was emitted from the volcano on Tuesday, January 29, and Wednesday, January 30, flowing up to 1400 m (4600 ft) down the slopes of the Merapi volcano. Officials also warned on January 30 that Merapi entered an effusive eruption phase after a series of lava avalanches occurred. However, authorities have maintained the current “caution” warning level (the second on a four-tiered national volcano alert system). Localized transportation disruptions are possible in the near term if the volcanic activity continues to increase.
Context
Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia has a persistent risk of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis. In October and November 2010, Mount Merapi experienced a series of powerful eruptions that killed over 350 people and forced more than 20,000 others to evacuate.
