5.5-magnitude earthquake strikes near Chitose (Hokkaido) February 21; aftershocks possible in the near term

At approximately 21:22 (local time) on Thursday, February 21, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck some 24 km (15 mi) east of Chitose (Hokkaido). No casualties or material damage have yet been reported. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected regions should monitor the situation, be prepared for further aftershocks, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
