Kazakhstan: Extreme cold temperatures forecast in north and east February 5-7

Outbreak of extremely cold temperatures, snowfall forecast in northern and eastern provinces February 5-7; transportation disruptions to be expected in coming days

A winter weather system is forecast to bring blizzard conditions, including heavy snow and high winds, and cold temperatures across northern and eastern Kazakhstan between Tuesday, February 5, through Thursday, February 7. Temperatures in Astana are expected to dip as low as -37°C (-35°F) with wind chill factors of -51°C (-60°F) through Thursday. Snowfall totals of up to 10 cm (4 in) are forecast on Tuesday, creating hazardous travel conditions. The winter weather system is also forecast to impact North Kazakhstan, East Kazakhstan, Pavlodar, Akmola, Kostanay, and Karaganda provinces . Transportation disruptions, including flight delays and cancelations and adverse driving conditions, are possible.
