Political rallies to held in Harare and Gweru on February 23-24; heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions expected
Event
The Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF) party will reportedly hold a political rally at Robert Mugabe Square in Harare on Saturday, February 23, in support of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. A demonstration march is also planned in the capital, with roughly 200,000 people expected to attend, according to organizers.
Additionally, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) opposition party is expected to hold a political rally at the Mkoba Stadium in Gweru (Midlands province) at 11:00 (local time) on Sunday, February 24, in support of party leader Nelson Chamisa. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the demonstration sites in Harare and Gweru. Clashes between rally participants, opposition supporters, and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Context
Political tensions have been high since the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission declared incumbent President Mnangagwa the winner of the July 30 presidential elections. Chamisa has alleged that the election should be invalidated due to fraud.
Advice
Individuals in Zimbabwe are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any related public demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
