Angola: Thousands displaced by flooding in Malanje February 28
Recent heavy rain and flash flooding displaces almost 5000 people in Malanje province as of February 28; further rain forecast in coming days
Event
Heavy rains in northern Malanje province have caused significant flash flooding in the area as of Thursday, February 28. Almost 5000 residents have been displaced and at least 815 houses have been destroyed in nine municipalities. The most heavily impacted areas include Malanje, Cangadala, Mucari, Cambundi-Catembo, and Quirima. Additional rain is forecast in the region through Saturday, March 2, and may cause further flooding.
Advice
Individuals in Malanje province are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid flood-prone areas, prepare for lingering transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
