Around 2000 firefighters are combating at least 25 bushfires in Victoria state as of Sunday, March 3. At least five buildings in Yinnar North and Bunyip, including some homes, have been destroyed by the recent round of fires. A four-day heatwave has exacerbated fire conducive conditions in southern Australia, particularly in Victoria, South Australia, southern areas of Western Australia, and Tasmania. Further fires are possible in the region in the coming days.

Context

Bushfires in southeast Australia are common throughout the year but are more prevalent and severe in the summer and autumn months from December through March. Australia is currently experiencing its hottest summer on record.
