On Thursday, March 28, American diplomatic authorities in Port-au-Prince issued a security alert for active roadblocks on Avenue Maïs Gaté, near Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP), and along Rue Carradeux. The roadblocks were reportedly erected by waste management workers, who are protesting over unpaid wages. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the aforementioned areas over the coming hours.
Context
National Solid Waste Management Service (SNGRS) workers have staged several demonstrations in recent days over unpaid wages.
As a reminder, demonstrations calling for the indictment and resignation of President Jovenel Moïse are possible nationwide on March 29. Local sources indicate protests will take place in the capital Port-au-Prince and other cities on Friday to coincide with the 32nd anniversary of the ratification of the Haitian constitution.
