Indonesia: 5.5-magnitude earthquake hits Lombok March 17
A 5.5-magnitude earthquake strikes Lombok, near Mount. Rinjani, on March 17; further aftershocks and consequent damage possible in coming hours
Event
A 5.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded on Lombok (West Nusa Tenggara province) on Sunday, March 17, at 15:07 (local time). The epicenter was located approximately 24 km (15 mi) deep on the eastern side of Mount Rinjani. Further aftershocks and consequent infrastructure damage are possible in the coming hours and days.
Context
Lombok experienced a series of earthquakes in July and August 2018 that resulted in nearly 600 deaths, more than 1000 injuries, and widespread damage to the island. Much of Indonesia lies on the "Ring of Fire," an area of frequent seismic activity.
Advice
Individuals in or traveling to Lombok, particularly the northern portion of the island, are advised to anticipate aftershocks and associated damage and disruptions to travel.
In the event of further earthquakes and aftershocks, individuals should protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls (ideally in a corner), and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
