Indonesia: Quake-triggered landslides kill at least two on Lombok March 17 /update 1

Event

Two earthquakes of moderate intensity struck Lombok on the afternoon (local time) of Sunday, March 17, triggering landslides which left at least two people dead at the Tiu Kelep waterfall in the northern part of the island. Authorities estimate that some 35 others may still be trapped by debris at the site. Aftershocks are possible in the area over the coming hours and days.

Context

Lombok experienced a series of earthquakes in July and August 2018 that resulted in nearly 600 deaths, more than 1000 injuries, and widespread damage to the island. Much of Indonesia lies on the "Ring of Fire," an area of frequent seismic activity.

Advice

Individuals in or traveling to Lombok, particularly the northern portion of the island, are advised to anticipate aftershocks and associated damage and disruptions to travel.

In the event of further earthquakes and aftershocks, individuals should protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows and exterior walls (ideally in a corner), and avoid attempting to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
