Israel: Major flooding in Jerusalem February 28

Jerusalem and other parts of Israel experienced flash flooding on Thursday, February 28, after heavy rains hit the country. According to media reports, around 13.6 cm (5.3 in) of rain fell on Jerusalem, about one quarter of the city's annual average rainfall. Floodwaters isolated the Ein Kerem Agricultural School in Yerushalayim before emergency personnel were able to rescue around 1200 children and teachers on Thursday night (local time). Earlier in the day, two drivers were rescued in separate incidents in the Arazim Valley after their cars were swept away in the waters. Dozens of people were also reportedly trapped in a building in the Beit Hanina neighborhood. Additional rain is forecast for Jerusalem through Saturday, March 2, which could lead to further flooding.

Individuals in Jerusalem are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate flooding and transportation disruptions, and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
