Mozambique: Militant attacks in Cabo Delgado March 4

Event

Unidentified militants reportedly attacked the villages of Manilha, Ntotwe, and Mumu, all located along the main road between Palma, Mocimboa da Praia, and Pemba (Cabo Delgado province) on the evening (local time) of Monday, March 4. A large number of houses were reportedly destroyed and at least three villagers were killed in the attacks. Further such attacks are possible in the near term.

Context

Additional government forces have been deployed into Cabo Delgado province since February 21, when an oil company convoy was ambushed near the village of Mute. The local Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) group is suspected of conducting the ambushes. The group is also believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017.
