At least 50 New People's Army (NPA) rebels attacked the Victoria Municipal Police Station in Northern Samar province (Eastern Visayas region) on Thursday, March 28, wounding at least three police officers. Police also killed three NPA rebels and captured three others during the assault. Four civilians in a private car were also reportedly wounded at a checkpoint nearby the Victoria police station, manned by the NPA, when the rebels opened fire on their car.
Similar NPA attacks, as well as counterinsurgency operations targeting suspected militants, are possible in the region over the near term.
Context
The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines; the group will be marking the 50th anniversary of its founding on March 29. The NPA is believed to have around 3500 fighters in their ranks who engage in killings, bombings, and hostage-taking across the archipelago. On March 21, President Rodrigo Duterte terminated the state panel for peace talks with the Community Party of the Philippines.
