Indonesia: Flooding continues in Jakarta, southern Sumatra April 29 /update 1

Flooding due to recent heavy rains has continued in the greater Jakarta area and parts of southern Sumatra as of Monday, April 29. In Jakarta, at least two people were killed and around 1300 people remain displaced due to high water levels on the Ciliwung River, primarily in East Jakarta and South Jakarta. Areas to the south of Jakarta, including Bogor City, Bogor Regency, and Depok City, have also been affected by the flooding.

In southern Sumatra, heavy rains on Saturday, April 27, affected nine regencies and cities in Bengkulu province: Bengkulu City, Kaur, North Bengkulu, Central Bengkulu, South Bengkulu, Seluma, Kapahiang, Lebong, and Rejang Lebong. At least 17 people were killed and nine remain missing. More than 12,000 others are displaced and many roads, bridges, and other infrastructure, including drainage systems, have been damaged or destroyed. Some landslides have been reported in the region, restricting access from South Sumatra province to Bengkulu province. Other transportation disruptions are likely in the coming days and weeks, along with a heightened security and emergency management presence.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate further flooding and associated disruptions, including landslides, road closures, and power and telecommunication outages, confirm the status of roads before traveling, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products.
