Indonesia: Officials lift tsunami warning after earthquake off Sulawesi April 12 /update 1

Officials have lifted the tsunami warning originally issued shortly after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the island of Sulawesi at approximately 19:40 (local time) on Friday, April 12. However, authorities are continuing to advise people in coastal areas to evacuate to higher ground as a precaution. No damages or casualties have yet been reported as a result of the quake, which was centered 102 km (63 mi) south-southwest of Luwuk at a depth of 17.5 km (10.5 mi), according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Aftershocks remain possible over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to evacuate low-lying coastal areas, monitor developments to the situation, be prepared for aftershocks, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
