Kyrgyzstan: Demonstration planned in Bishkek April 30 /update 1

Environmental activists have called for a protest in Bishkek on Tuesday, April 30, to denounce a uranium development project in the Issyk-Kul region. Participants will reportedly gather at Ala-Too Square from 11:00 (local time) and march to the Old Square. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are likely around the demonstration site.

Context

Protestors have called for the cancellation of the uranium development project at Kara-Balta Mining Plant and a full ban on development of uranium across the country due to concerns over its environmental impact. A similar demonstration was previously held in Bishkek on April 26.
