The Philippines prepares to celebrate Holy Week, also known as Semana Santa or Mahal na Araw, beginning with Palm Sunday on Sunday, April 14, and continuing through Easter on Sunday, April 21. Official government holidays are observed on Thursday, April 18, through Saturday, April 20. Disruptions to commercial and government services are expected during this time and some businesses may be holding limited hours throughout the week.
Transportation and travel disruptions, including congestion, delays, and increased demand for lodging and transport, are also possible during the entire week and for several days after Easter. A heightened security presence is also possible throughout the country, particularly in the southern regions of the Philippines.
