Afghanistan: Complex attack ongoing in Kabul May 8 /update 1
Security forces are engaging gunmen in the Shahr-e-Naw area of Kabul on May 8 following an earlier explosion; details are still emerging
Event
Afghan security forces are engaging an unconfirmed number of attackers near the Attorney General's Office in the Shahr-e-Naw area of Kabul as of 13:00 (local time) on Wednesday, May 8. The assault began with the detonation of an explosive device at approximately 11:45. According to the Ministry of Interior Affairs, the attack is targeting an international organization. The Taliban have released a statement claiming responsibility for the attack. Details are still emerging.
Context
Taliban and Islamic State (IS) militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.
Advice
Individuals in Kabul are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the areas of the blast, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities or their home governments.
The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
