Kabul officials increased security measures throughout the city on the morning (local time) of Wednesday, May 22, in anticipation of widespread political demonstrations. Riot police have reportedly been deployed across Kabul to preemptively contain protesters. Multiple routes throughout the city have also been closed including in Taimani, Gul Bahar, Pashtonistan, and Puli Mohmood Khan districts and parts of PD9. Significant traffic disruptions are anticipated throughout Kabul due to the preemptive security measures. As of 08:45 on Wednesday, specific protest locations have not been announced. The heightened security measures may remain in place throughout Wednesday.

Context

Political tensions are high in Afghanistan as the National Unity Government (NUG) legal term will end on May 22. The Council of Presidential Candidates released a statement on Tuesday, May 21, calling for president Ashraf Ghani to either leave office on Wednesday or reach a political consensus with Afghan politicians on his tenure.
