Australia: Tropical Cyclone Ann to make landfall near Cape York May 15

Event

Tropical Cyclone Ann formed off the northeast coast of Australia in the Coral Sea on Sunday, May 12, and is forecast to make landfall on the Cape York Peninsula around midday (local time) Wednesday, May 15. The storm is producing sustained winds of 75 kph (46 mph) and is forecast to weaken slightly just before landfall near Lockhart (Queensland state). The storm is not expected to grow beyond an Australian Category 1 cyclone, or the equivalent of an Atlantic tropical storm. Heavy rains, wind, and strong waves are likely near Cape York along with associated disruptions, including power outages, downed trees, road closures, and some flooding.

Individuals in northern Queensland state are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and anticipate sever weather and associated disruptions, including flooding, transportation disruptions, and power outages. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult.
