Côte d'Ivoire: Curfew imposed in Béoumi following violent clashes May 16 /update 1

Local authorities imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Béoumi (Vallée du Bandama district) on Thursday, May 16, following intercommunal clashes which took place overnight on May 15-16. The curfew will be in place from 18:00 to 06:00 (local time) until further notice. Heightened security measures, nightly movement restrictions, and ongoing tensions are to be expected in the area in the coming weeks.

Context

Violent clashes erupted on May 15-16 between the Baoule and Malinke ethnic communities, leaving nine people killed and 84 others wounded. Fighting broke out between two groups of moto-taxi drivers belonging to each community, which resulted in property destructions as the groups set fire to several shops.
